M-Net brings your typical small, quiet Karoo town to life
In the little Karoo town Eden, we meet Tannie Maria, a Karoo tannie on a farm. She has a love for cooking and food. For Tannie Maria food is the way to celebrate and express feelings. For Tannie Maria, a good pie or curry solves everything. Eden is a close-knit community where most of its occupants are known to each other.
Quirky murder mystery
Tannie Maria (played by international award-winning actress Maria Doyle Kennedy) writes a recipe-advice column for the little Karoo town’s local newspaper. Odd? Well, Tannie Maria is somewhat of an odd character. Her calm, love of living on her farm, cooking up a storm and writing, is turned upside down when one of her column readers is murdered.
The abusive husband? Or the protective friend? Tannie Marie sets out to find the killer. She teams up with rookie journalist Jessie September (played by newcomer Kylie Fisher). They are always one step ahead of the local police but do round up a few unlikely suspects.
Small town character
The cast in this ten-part series consists of some familiar and fresh faces. Arno Greeff, Grant Swanby, Tony Kgororge and Jennifer Steyn are just some of the names that will grace your screens with their talent and appearance. A pleasant surprise is Daneel van der Walt as Anna Pretorius. Another amazing performance by this actress. Daneel’s value to the art of acting has been overlooked for far too long and seeing her in another series following Nêrens Noordkaap (kykNET) certainly does make her fans happy.
South African writer Karen Jeynes adapted the novel for television. Karen is also an executive producer, with Scotland-based director/writer Annie Griffin as story consultant and co-executive producer.

Episode 1 introduces the characters, and the story quickly develops into a burst of flavours and happenings. M-Net African Mystery Originals brings you ‘Recipes for love and murder’ on channel 101.
