Sisters cook up a storm
Portuguese sisters Jessica and Nicole from Linden as the last home-restaurant of group 1, cooks from Gran’s family recipe book and puts a modern twist on the tried and tested recipes. They are feeling both excited and nervous.
Judge J’Something, a Portuguese descendant, is very excited about this restaurant and expects a show-off of tradition from these two. The menu makes the judges slightly nervous, and they wonder how far the sisters will push the classical dishes. The question is raised – will it work?
Their modern Madeira restaurant takes their guests on a journey of colour and heritage and again its Nederburg Wines that makes a good party drink. Their aim is to present food you would envy other people eating. In the kitchen however, things are tense as time is not on their side. The stakes are high – the lowest scoring team will be out of the competition at this episode and Jessica reminds herself to: “Stay calm … stay calm … stay calm.”
Their starter was a traditional potato soup with a twist. The thick and creamy flavours worked well but it needed more kale. The guests missed the potato taste in the soup. The main raised eyebrows and guests did not like the idea of foil on the plate. The judges felt that, however tasteful. It veered too far form tradition and the sides was a let-down.
Nicole is having a hard time in the kitchen and struggles to keep herself together as the dessert fell short on balance and the ice cream did not make the bar.
Their score from the other teams tallied to 22 out of 40 and the final score came in at 40 out of 100, leaving them with the second lowest score from group 1. Mark and Mbali, who thought the dish was unbalanced, gave the sisters a low score of two out of ten. Was this a critical or strategic score? However, it did not save them from elimination. Mbali expects alliances that they were not part of.
This is a show where you come for the food and stay for the drama. The judges reveal little while tasting and the house guests have their own, sometimes brutally honest, opinions. This season’s 10 pairs of home cooks will steam and cook it till 11 December, where one of the 10 pairs will walk away with R1 million!
